Snorkeling in Key West
Well, we know that fishing in Key West is really awesome. Sport fishers from all over show up all year for the various sport fishing seasons, like Key West tarpon fishing season starts in March or April and runs through the warm weather season into October. Key West is just known for its great saltwater sport fishing, and has been for years, especially since Ernest Hemingway made it famous in the 1930s while he was here to write for about nine years.
Well, there’s another reason to come to this island city, and it’s Key West snorkeling. The coral reef is only about six miles from shore, and there are patches of reef at kayaking distance from the beaches on South Roosevelt Blvd. If you have a kayak, you can go snorkeling in Key West. But it’s really easy to join a snorkeling excursion, since there are so many in Key West. Cruise ships come to Key West all year, so there are several water sports companies in town, each offering slightly different versions of the snorkel trip.
Whichever boat you choose, it’s a great day on the reef because the fish in the water and living on the coral reef are fascinating and gorgeous. Especially colorful and the small types of reef fish that are not at all targeted by fishermen. Blue tang, Sargent Majors, blennies, Angel fish, and on and on. Nobody here eats them, and they come in all vibrant colors of the rainbow.
Definitely try and get some snorkeling in if you go to Key West!
